I like virtually every homemade cranberry relish and sauce I have ever tasted. What could be fresher, in the middle of heavy winter meals, than all that red tartness? One answer: Mama Stamberg's Cranberry Relish. My dashing younger brother and I - we like this bracing, horseradish-y, icy stuff.

I have heard Susan Stamberg (my all-time favorite radio "voice") read the recipe several times, but had no idea she has done so every year since 1971! Enjoy reading all about that here.

Another great thing about this recipe, like all recipes -- its provenance morphs. Actually it is not Mama Stamberg's, or Susan Stamberg's, but New York Timesfood writer Craig Claiborne's recipe from a column in 1959 -- when I don't think I had yet heard of horseradish.
