Wild Blackberries: Kentucky's Signature Summer Fruit Arrives Early!
Lonnie Wilson at Hoot Owl Holler Farm (Boyle County, Kentucky) has already picked wild blackberries this year. I bought these beauties at the Lexington Farmers Market on June 16, at least a week earlier than they usually arrive. Lonnie says, "These are the first. They are only going to get better."
I'm working on a recipe for blackberry pie, and some poor, mistreated friends had to help taste this effort. My starting point recipe is (late, lamented) Gourmet'sLattice Top Blackberry Pie.
One friend cherishes the wild, sweet-tart, smooth-bitter special taste of wild blackberries as much as I do. Happiness in a plate.
