Tobacco Road's Destination: Wineries, for Some

Vines at Lovers Leap Vineyard, KYWall Street Journal reporter Erica Alini mentions Kentucky twice in her August 20 (09) story, Tobacco Road Leads to Wineries, but she includes no references to specific Bluegrass farms that have made the leaf-to-vine transition. That's not wonderful.

The story has two virtues, though. Virginia farms' successes with producing well-received wines can encourage Kentucky vintners.

The straightforward financial information in the article (this is the Wall Street Journal, after all) may also be useful to growers who are considering grape production. As in so many cases, it's the value-added (and complex) wine-making process that holds real financial promise for boosting on-farm income.
